According to his grandson Cecil Isherwood Stapleton:- John Howell ran away from school and went to sea. Joined The Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs Service. He became Harbour Master of Canton. In recognition he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner. He was honoured with The Order of the Double Dragons.
